From the Editor

The thought of an elixir—in my mind—conjures up an image of a concoction that supports our wellness and vitality. According to Ayurveda, everything has the potential to be something that supports our health, from our experiences to new superfoods. How we meditate can be a powerful practice that allows us to recognize the elixir in everything.

This season of the year, when our hours spent in darkness increase daily, is a powerful time of self-reflection. This is a powerful time for us to drink the elixir of spirit and to taste the nectar of our deep spiritual practice.

Our practice takes a variety of forms, including the time spent in silence as well as the raucous celebrations of gatherings of family and friends. Savor them all.

5 Superfoods to Perk up Your Plate

Per calorie, these foods offer exceptionally high quantities of healthy goodness; and when you incorporate these special ingredients into recipes, they help you get the most goodness out of each and every bite you take. Superfoods are the perfect example of “not all calories are created equal,” in the very best sense. Eating superfoods leads to long-term satiation and satisfaction.

Try adding these 5 superfoods to your life: dragonfruit, hemp, spirulina, acai berries, and maqui berries.

Maqui berries are currently ranked the world’s number one antioxidant-rich food (based on their soaring ORAC score). This rating is primarily due to their massively high levels of heart-healthy, anti-aging anthocyanin antioxidants, which is also what makes these dark purple berries appear almost black. Add their high Vitamin C content, fiber, and low sugar, and it’s easy to see what makes these berries such a well-rounded superfood. Indigenous to Patagonia, you can find maqui in powdered form in health food stores in Los Angeles.

Parfait Ingredients

12 ounces unsweetened vanilla coconut yogurt, divided
1½ teaspoons maqui berry powder
Yacon syrup or maple syrup
1 cup fresh chopped fruit (such as peaches, plums, or mango)
3 tablespoons popped amaranth

We all experience life’s sweet moments. These are so magical that you feel suffused with vitality and gratitude, slightly high.

These flashes may come after working hard pursuing your passion – you just did a hard yoga class perfectly matched to your skill level, and now you are on your mat happy and exhausted. You labored for a month to put in a garden and are standing in the morning light beholding a little world of green. There is a new baby in the home, and now you are watching her sleep. You have been dancing for hours and the music has carried you away into a realm of pure motion. You traveled to a yoga retreat, and after days of asana, it feels miraculous just to breathe. You are drinking in the juicy essence of life, and it’s holy. We can call these elixir moments.

As America’s best-known experimental performance artist, Laurie Anderson has made her mark in many forms of media: multimedia stage performances, seven books, multiple studio albums and soundtracks, visual art museum installations. And, yes, filmmaking. Laurie’s meditative nonfiction film,Heart of a Dog, is an impressionistic musing on love, life, and death reinforced by evocative music. The film especially speaks to everyone who has loved their dog.

The holidays are known to exacerbate anxiety, stress, and an overall imbalance in one’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Seasonal changes, financial stress, family pressure, holiday shopping, unrealistic expectations, and not being close in proximity to family and friends are some of the triggers that can cause imbalance. The solution can be found through cultivating consistency in daily routine of ancient Ayurvedic rituals performed each morning. Set aside time for you this holiday season. Even a few minutes a day can create the shifts needed to maintain balance.
